The town on the Douglas Channel, chosen by Unbridle as arrival of the Northern Gateway pipeline which was then stopped, has a unique slogan describing its mission (impossible?): Kitimat, the marvel of industry and nature
Built in the 50s by the Aluminium Company of Canada, Kitimat is still depending on industries for its economy. Projects of lng plants and terminals are more than welcome. But construction sites go on even if there isn't a final investment plan signed by the companies: prices on the gas market are too low. |
The Haisla First Nation supports industrial developments and is an active partner of Chevron and Apache in the lng business for the construction of a liquefying plant
Tight connections between industries and First Nation can be seen thanks to rich contributions to cultural activities (above the commission of a totem pole by the aluminium company) and public housing and construction (in the big picture, the building of the sport center and the fire department in Kitamaat) |
